With Christmas spirit in the air, we thought we would give you a Christmas themed food play activity: how to make a food Christmas Wreath! Food play is great for helping fussy eaters explore and learn about new foods. Our 10 Top Tips for Food Play may be helpful to read alongside this post.
Level: Medium - Hard
What you will need:
Tenderstem broccoli (cooked)
Cherries with sticks
Cinnamon sticks
Pretzels
Melted chocolate (if you are wanting a healthy option, our favourite is 100% dark chocolate)
A wire coat hanger or a wreath wire
String or dental floss
Scissors
Tweezers (if required)
The Activity:
Gather everything that you will need.
First, show your child how to dip the pretzels into the melted chocolate and let them give it a go. Place them on a plate and put them in the fridge to harden. If your child does not want to touch the melted chocolate, they can use tweezers to hold the pretzels.
Place the wire coat hanger or a wreath wire in front of you and your child.
Use the scissors to cut pieces of the string or dental floss. Put these aside.
Take one tenderstem broccoli at a time and wrap it around the wire using the string or dental floss to tie it on as you go. Encourage your child to hold the broccoli in place as you tie.
Tie the string or dental floss on to the cherry stems and the cinnamon sticks. Then tie them to the  wire coat hanger or a wreath wire. Some can hang close to the wreath while others can be longer and hanging off the wreath.
When the pretzels have hardened, thread through the string or dental floss and tie them to the  wire coat hanger or a wreath wire.
Now it's game time... hang the wreath up in a space that you can stand next to or underneath it. With your hands behind your back, see who can eat the most pieces off the wreath. If this is too difficult, you can: 1) see who can rip off the most pieces with their teeth and spit these onto a plate or 2) see who can hit the most foods with their tongue in 30 seconds.
